i wanted to write something about the significance of this date in the history of this country and the history of our time, this world. but i find it very difficult to do this.
the morning that the towers fell i was taking my mom to work. i heard the news on the radio in my old truck. it was something like three or four hours from the actual moment the first plane was seen against the sky. it was seven on the west coast when i'd heard. the sleep was still in my eyes. it was jarring and i didn't really understand what was happening.
i listened to the news all the way home. it was panic. a thought crossed my mind about the war of the worlds and i kept looking around at the traffic of cars and people. i kept expecting everything to stop or something. but half the people were waking up to it or sitting down with it. the other half just had to keep going because the light had just turned green and you didn't want to be the cause of a bottle-necked hold up in the flow.
everyone stayed glued to their sets. devouring all that cnn and fox news and ktla and nbc had to offer.
tonight there's a special on discovery. i'd like to finish watching it. its hosted by a pretty well-known journalist who is doing this very carefully paced piece about the arab and muslim perspective on the american empire and the nine/eleven attacks
