after brushing my teeth and wiping the wet from my chin i hear the hoot of a passing train. i shut my eyes ready for the light change, shut off the light and unlock the door. the train sounds howl and i step into a short hall and then into a room. ray charles sings out but i keep him at a hush, i keep him private, i keep him for me. the train, momentarily pushed aside, falls away into the background of early morning dark. just snuffed out like so much weakened candle light.
blue music travels toward me and a reaching hand stretches out in tender invitation. a voice from out of long cool shades asks if i'll share a dance under starless skies. i smile and take the offer without a second thought. slowly, we sway.
the end of the song that drew me in is played with lingering care; the feeling traveling out like the particles from a picnic cloth being shaken over a haze, like watching it fall to the ground on a million unseen arms.
