i'm going to the beach today! yesiree.. actually i'm a little nervous because i am in fact two different colors, e.g. my legs are noticably lighter than my arms or face or neck. sad. ah well at least i'll be out with friends and a child and not too many attractive-ish, slutty people will be making fun. and anyway FUCK 'EM! bastard coronadians (?)
there's a movie playing while i'm making this entry. i LOVE this movie. it may actually be my favorite western/drama there is. that movie is The Big Country, starring Gregory Peck, Jean Simmons, Charlton Heston, Burl Ives, Charles Bickford, Carroll Baker and directed by William Wyler. Burl Ives won an oscar for best supporting actor. there are so many great scenes. the two that are usually most memorable to me are the fight scene that (supposedly) takes place at dawn between Heston and Peck. See, Heston's character (and pretty much all the other characters in the movie/story) are all about proving something for all to see. Heston challenged Peck to a fight because Heston wanted to prove to Peck's rich, betrothed that Peck was wrong about something. this will have been the second time Peck has side-stepped the whole "prove yourself" attitude of these friggin big country ranch owners. anyway Peck has just come from an argument with the woman he's engaged to and he finally decides to leave and hang the whole engagement/marriage situation. on his way out he wakes old Heston up (Heston is a ranch hand.. head ranch hand actually) and he says he's leavin and he just wanted to say his goodbyes.. in other words "throw down" time. heheheh. then they fight. just the two of them. in the middle of the night ((i think this may be one of those shooting day for night type deals too)) and there is no audience egging anybody on. the camera angles stay wide.. an actually get wider, from what i remember. the two men, so large in stature, end up looking so small. and its a fair fight too! it's great. i hate fighting but i like that scene and the concept behind it. doing things because they mean something; proving yourself to the only person that matters in a case where pride is involved, yourself and no one else.
good stuff... oh, and the other scene i liked so much was the one where Burl Ives delivers his challenge to the foufou rival ranchers.. well actually who am i kidding. i love Burl Ives in all his scenes for this movie. gah.. i could go on and on.. OOH! the fight scene!!!
it's twelve.. i should be getting ready soon.. i don't know how i'm going to stand the heat. ooh! i guess i was wrong about the one camera angle thing in this scene. i mean that it does like intercut close-ups of the fight but still it never gets too close at all. and the thing you end up remembering most are the wider shots and that the fight just seems to go on. and the fighters are all ragged and just when you think it's over at a stalemate... background music starts. they're both fighting and Heston says, all hoarsely, "All I've got to say is that you sure take a helluva long time to say goodbye" and Peck says, "I'm just about finished...." and they both stand and Peck says, "Alright, so what've we proved?" and i think Heston actually says, 'nothin' and Peck then walks away.
good grief. i guess i just can't stop talking about this movie. i don't know. it's just a really great buddy movie. i mean even the lovey-dovey stuff that eventually happens between jean simmons and gregory peck.. even that stuff is more about an actual partnership than mushy gushy stuff. ok ok ok.. i've got to stop this. i guess i just really dig this flick.
good god! i've got to get ready!!! oh the heat.. oh my nerves.
